DEV BLOG - Week 50 of 2021

Sunday, December 12th

Started out by writing a gui for GluPy. I followed along and modified a video I was watching.

Leo moved to a larger tank today, and so far he seems to really like the extra room.

I also was able to verify that my cron to update this gemini site is actually working. That's good, since last week I had to manually go in and perform the fetch myself.

I am looking into a Pi kit. I have a server in the cloud that I'd like to bring home. It saves me about $60 a year if I do this, and I'd like to find a way to incorporate it into my current energy consumption reduction efforts. Part of my drive is to make a platform for myself that suits a mobile nomadic lifestyle, is tightly contained, and doesn't cost a lot to maintain.

The server is mostly intended to keep a backup of my git repos on GitLab, since they accidentally locked me out of my own account a while back. That was its own nightmare. My opinion of the thing is that bringing Lacia home will help consolidate my technology in a way that allows better control of the energy and data integrity. I'm concerned about getting my consumption down across the board while improving my quality of life.

I added siege and wireshark to Kouka, and I'm on the path to get her and Tuesday both on Python 3.10.

I made a list of some of the things I wanted to get done, and I hope to get to them today. Unfortunately it's 5AM and I'm still wide awake, which isn't good.

Today's engineering debacle was putting in a new popty-ping that mounts under the cabinetry. Did I mention I don't possess the proper tools for this job?

In other news, I discovered two or three new apps to use.

Got my speaker kit in the post, along with some other things for Leo. I am using Obsidian a good bit now, and I like the way it's handling. You can get a lot of good coverage with it, and that's excellent for notes.

I also installed Albert on Kouka. It's not quite the robust system that Alfred is on Mac, but I get the impression that I can turn it into something with a little love and hacking.

Saturday, December 18th

Spent today working a lot more with my notes, and I think it will be very helpful to me in the long run.

Takeaways

This was all in all a good week. I got a few new toys to play with, and new things to hack on. My work week was also better and more productive. My hands hurt a little getting used to the Helix, but that will get better with time.
