Your friend holds the door open for you as you walk into a dimly lit room, your pointy cat ears brushing against the doorframe, which seems to be slightly too low. Your nose is immediately assaulted by the powerful smell of paint and varnish, making your snout scrunch up slightly as you take a step inside. To your left you can see a big shelf covering the entirety of the wall, adorned with dozens of colourful figurines. To your right is a wooden desk with a bright lamp, its surface covered in little paint stains of various colours. A small figure of a wolf rests in the middle of the desk, the fur on its head painted bright green but the rest of its body and clothes completely white.

- Wooooooah...

You take another couple of steps into the room. Your friend walks behind you, smiling to themselves, very obviously pleased with your reaction.

- Cool, huh?

- And you've painted all of these?

- Yup. I picked up the hobby a few months ago and found that it was a great way to destress after work.

You walk over to the shelf and let your eyes skim over the figures of diverse animals, some anthropomorphic and some with varied body shapes. You stand on tippy toes to look at a specific figure of a bat that catches your attention, your own bat wings folded behind your back as you stretch out to see it better.

- You can pick it up if you want.

You look to your friend, slightly surprised, and then turn your attention back to the figure and reach up with your paw to grab it as carefully as you can. The figure is only as tall as one of your fingers. You examine it from different angles.

- They're super detailed, aren't they? I used to order them online, but then I found a local...

Your friend's voice sort of fades into the background as you stare at the figure. You blink. You find that your mind keeps wandering back to this one strange thought. You can't help but imagine that this bat you're holding is alive somehow. Its wings even seem to twitch slightly. It's weird, but the sensation of holding someone so tiny is... comforting, somehow. It feels right in a way that's difficult to describe. You roll it around between your fingers, imagining how this would feel if you were holding a real, living person...

- Holly!

A voice snaps you out of your train of thought.

- You alright? You seemed a little out of it.

- O-oh. Yeah, I'm fine! I was just thinking about how well you can see the all the tiny details.

Your friend grins, satisfied. You mentally pat yourself on the back for your quick thinking.

- Alright, alright. It's not good to stay here for very long with the window closed. Come, let's go back to the living room.

They motion towards themselves, then turn around and walk in the opposite direction. You nod and carefully place the figurine back on the shelf, then follow your friend out of the roo-

THWAP.

You bonk your forehead against the doorframe. Your friend quickly turns around, concerned.

- Holly? Are you alright? Did you hit yourself with something?

You rub your head, crouching slightly to fit through the door.

- Ow. I'm fine, I'm fine. Geez...

Thinking nothing more of it, you follow your friend back to the living room and sit on the couch with them. You two keep talking about your other hobbies for a bit. Something feels... strange about them, though you can't quite put your finger on why. Were they wearing something different before? Is it their hairstyle...?

No, they just seem shorter than before. Definitely. It doesn't take very long for them to realize something is amiss either.

- Um, Holly? It might be my imagination, but aren't you... taller than you were a moment ago?

- T-taller? That can't be, if anything you must be shorter!

You both stand up to your feet as if to prove a point. And... yep. The tips of your ears are brushing against the ceiling.

- See? It's definitely you.

You feel a rush of warmth on your cheeks. You want to protest, but can't deny the obvious. Taller? Really? What the heck is happening?

- B-b-but how can I have gotten taller in the span of a few minutes? That doesn't make any sense!!

- Well, um... did you eat or drink anything weird today? Maybe-

- U-uhm...

You shyly interrupt your friend, because you don't have much of a choice. Your head is now pressed firmly against the ceiling, and you no longer have room to stand on your feet without craning your neck forward.

- I think... it's still going...

Your friend looks up at you with an alarmed look on their face. You get down on your knees, which should give you a bit more time... but even then, you can now see the ceiling approaching your eye level alarmingly quickly. Thinking fast, your friend runs to the big glass door that leads to their backyard and slides it open, motioning at you to go through it. You crawl as quickly as you can, folding your wings tightly against your back so you can fit through. Your waist is a little too wide by the time you're halfway through, so you have no choice but to force yourself through, breaking the sliding doors out of their frame in the process. You're finally outside, so you stand up to your feet.

The fence that separates the backyards of adjacent houses, so that neighbours can't see each other, barely reaches up to your waist. Your friend is now outside too, and looks up at you, mouth agape.

- S-sorry about the... door...

- I think we have more important issues to worry about right now!

Indeed, another quick glance around you shows that the fence is now only at the height of your knees. You're not only growing, you're growing faster. Your blushing is now much more evident. You stand frozen in place, unsure of what to do, as your footpaws slowly start taking up more and more of the surface of your friend's backyard.

- Let's get you out of here first!

You nod and look over the fence. One of the sides leads to a neighbour's house, and a couple of kids who were playing in their backyard are now staring up at you in amazement. The other side leads out into the street. You carefully raise your footpaw over the fence and step outside. You feel the ground sink under your footpaw, and raising it again reveals that you've left a huge paw print on the cracked asphalt. You swallow, reminding yourself that you have no other choice, and properly step out, this time trying (fruitlessly) to be a bit more careful.

Once you're out, you take another look around. Luckily there doesn't seem to be any cars around at this time of day, but there are plenty of people looking up at you, and some are even going out onto their balconies to see what all the commotion is about. Even now, you seem to be at eye level with a lady on the balcony... if just for a few seconds, because your eye level keeps rising higher, and it's not long before you've surpassed the height of the whole apartment building.

Then, just as quickly as it started, it comes to a halt. Your growth stops. You're now towering over every building in your immediate vicinity, and there's a fair amount of people congregated around your footpaws, wondering what the heck is going on, though you can't offer much of an explanation. It doesn't take long for you to spot your friend among the crowd, and you reach down, carefully pick them up between two fingertips, and stand back up, letting them sit on your palm.

As you look down at them, you can't help but recall the feeling of holding a little figurine in your paw, accompanied with the same sensation. Yeah, this somehow feels... right.

- S-so... um...

You stutter a bit, trying to think of something to say. Your friend is looking up at you from your paw. Wow, they look so small like this.

- Yeah, I've heard of this happening before.

- Y-you have?

- It's rare, but yeah. People growing to gigantic proportions all of a sudden. I have no idea what causes it. I could search something up for you, but...

- Did they, um, ever... r-return to normal?

You can practically feel your cheeks turning bright red as your friend shakes their head, confirming your biggest fear. Or... your biggest hope, rather.

- They had to learn to live with it, and... well, so will you, I think. Don't worry, okay? We'll figure something out. I'll get in touch with some friends who can help you get settled into this.

You nod, and take another glance around you. The street is narrow enough that you can't stretch your arms out to the sides. Tiny people walk around everywhere, each of them not even reaching up to the height of your footpaw.

Yeah, looks like this is just how it's going to be for you from now on. And you can't wait.
