Circles In Circles
November 26, 2022
on the hill, right at the top, is an old well
sometimes, before the bucket comes up
full of the best water we ��ve ever had
we can hear what sounds like swearing below
where you ��d think no water
would comfortably rise uphill
still, that well has never run dry
no drought, no summer sun offends it
my sister and I, one winter, locked out
descended it, for it was warmer, unfrozen
met its inhabitants, both they and we surprised
a cistern beside the bucket, and some cussing
they whisper never to step foot underhill
for if you do, never above shall step again
but we ��ve school packs full of bake sale
we make friends, we make amends
now some nights we visit, or are visited above
no shared language, only gestures and baked goods
but the water is forever, and our butter trades just fine
with both our families inviting others in to sup
where the well is never frozen
where the doors are always open
now our basement has a passage
though down the rope ��s tradition
upon the hill, atop property and tilling
sometimes, before the bucket comes up
we accidentally drop the sack of muffins
to hear cheerful sounds of swearing down below
