The New Immortals

you keep saying this like it ��s a problem
that big scary, body snatchers snatching bodies
pod people coming out as your friends
but not a one of us will knowingly take something
not already moved on, or best case, shared space
but that takes permission
got a spinal injury that ��ll never solve
and a weird friend who doesn ��t quite fit
well, there ��s more of us than you might think
pop the question, don ��t expect immediate acceptance
and if you can ��t be polite, maybe reconsider
this co-habitation is for long, long life
memory goes both ways, after all
who ��d be dumb enough to do something
non-consenting to someone who �� bluntly
would soon enough be shared them
trauma inheritable in now-perfect memory
a reliquary self of retained impurities
you don ��t do the things you ��d relive
no-one wants that, to share space with someone
who ��d in good spirt commit atrocities upon themselves
simply because you ��re home, every hour, listening
our horror stories about younglings, first host
getting it wrong for a thousand years of suffering
