we kept different hours, him and I
part of sharing that upstairs downstairs
leaving each other comfy notes
laying out breakfasts, dinners
back-to-backing around our schedule
happy cat getting on in years
flats of eggs from his chickens
butter and milk from my cows
hired man keeping it all in hand
cowering at the doorstep
wouldn ��t want to bother us
thank-you for the pie, my wife and I
we much appreciate your baking
you really didn ��t have to, thank-you
cat resetting as cats do, snuggling up
kittening, turning in that sweet slumber
legs kicking, years purring on
notes and stew, notes and bread
no mice, and kittens on to cats
tumbled round one bed or the other
while we kept different hours
new hired man laying in the cedar shake
saying maybe this time beets
perhaps an orchard, down by the pass
can ��t say no to the hired man
long ��s he don ��t harass the cats
taking turns on the porch, dusk and dawn
watching that third run of apple trees
walking slow and steady up the field
chalkboard scratches steady, I ��
think we ��ve done well here
we two, think we ��ve done well
hired woman on the stoop
looking a little left, a little right
skipping the chalk, the rocking chair
saying maybe this year you ��d like geese ��
that ��s bravery right there
geese ain ��t no birds for the coward
surrounded in peaches, apples, pears
mill at the bottom of the hill moved on
flour coming in packages now
but still a good fit for three-kind-tart
no need to restart these old bones
just a bit of butter and getting on by note
some lives love is never seeing one ��s other
cat forever taking messages
