Dairy Solitude

removing alcohol from the equation would not have changed my childhood
perhaps somewhat less interpersonal violence, and the ice cream being less nom
but despite the alcoholism of a certain relative, and my own tolerance being dim
most things would have remained the same �� a hurricane of mud and running
sunning under the oldest maples, syrup long bottled, some fermented with mead
seeds of a coming cognizance taking hold of younger me and shaking the red out
watching those horizon clouds all horizontal, grabbing a bottle of the good stuff
lacing peanut butter to the bottom of the bowl, frozen delights in fruit and dairy
just enough upper-class delight for flavor, to be savored and not front-loaded
going from sharp to barely present in the cream and peanut layer towards the end
and thinking back, now, for each circumstance, each circumspective deliverance
how these days, it ��s just me and the cat �� no more puddle dog to wash the bowl
so I can have chocolate to my heart ��s content, and nevertheless forget, listening
to a lake down by the shore, a shore down by the swamp, a swamp
down by its own self, percolating away, every so often gassing loud enough
to overwhelm the bullfrogs, sound to silence for that flash-winter what never came
for which thanks has been given, and looking to the cycle coming again, rescinded
reinstated, confusedly rotated, eye coming round to methane stridence
where frogs have always been lurking, the sign of a good swamp, those frogs
the sign of a good heron on the edges, those pauses, not just in potential flame
but in summer days on the mossy hill, winging sing-song to the frogs again
still-here, still-here, still-here
