Cold Calling

you say you want to return to the old ways
blood for blood, balance for balance
like that ��s how the old was, like it was set
simpler version of now, anyhow
and wouldn ��t it be easy
but the old tongue ��s still supple
hunger and satiation rippling on wire
cracking code one second, nestled tight
packet sifted entirely by fire, anyhow
and wouldn ��t it be easy
to lift that ancient voice
re-take that ancient choice
same shift transpired
you say you want to burn the old bridges
but the timbers are tarred in our feathers
spreading steam engine wings, like it transferred
chamfered locomotion forever scampering
little coal feet done up in laudanum
asleep to the switch
but the signal gets through even colorblind
signs pointing to a station master who only swears yes
feeding things into the box, maw all lochs and grievances
clinker building to cool temper, all gunpowder pot
simpler tigers anyhow, bringing it all down
and wouldn ��t it be easy
to switch that ancient voice
to speak that ancient choice
sane shift retiered
