Needle Strains
August 31, 2022
zero seven hundred, four hours to sunup
cheery server at the sometimes-there kiosk looks me over
brisk ocean wind laying salt in our hair
gestures for my fingers, checks capillary refill
points in the general direction of that sourceless lighted quiver
tracks my eyes tracking waves, sniffs to each side of my face
air kisses backing up, nods, rotates shelf after shelf
never the same, layering into the pot
small unrecognizable quantities
pours a mug, gestures drink, all but a drop, bottom to top
where we are centered in ritual gestures
sharing no known language, and it tastes like mud
were there to be a thick colloidal goodness
holding one ��s hollows in sway
from the sea, from warm pocket, from vacuum seal
steel still smoking of stars, I refill the mug
add one contented breath, pass it over the threshold
gesture drink, all but a drop, bottom to top
that there remain from each of us a dollop
in quavering reanimation, whatever was needed
to be rinsed in that rolling over-dark sea
small more recognizable quantities
swelling one ��s breakers delay
