Indifferent Chemical Dependence

so you know
if you ever find a drug
that cures all the pain
makes it
so you can work again
so you can live again
so you can be
and then
slowly, heartbeat
by ever-loving heartbeat
becomes ineffective
if that drug
however good
on cessation recreates what it cured
worse
by six months
face down, wishing for dirt
that you might fill your mouth
comfortably
and the doctors say
hey, tolerance builds
give it a few years
so you can work again
so you can live again
so you can be
no matter how tempting
no matter how tempting
in whatever iteration
do not again begin
