papa was the sweetest thing if you looked from without the garden wall
forever, ever gardening and laying in the evening bulbs
starched white collar in the heat, sharp seams in falling rain
never a spot betwixt or between the spaces where we ��d thought he ��d been
papa was a gardener, always tilling in the fecund earth
raising refuse from lamplighters until swelling trumpets spoke strong out
lilies of the coffee ��d soil bending twice but never falling
children just a plot away, mother calling without a word to say
a belling of the hour
mama was a parishioner, seven parishes under kettle-bottom skirts
laying about her with slowest fire, strong where her edges met the earth
littering children most everywhere, no worries whose they ��d been
benefit to gardening, a lily for each and blooms for everyone
mama was harvester in towers when papa ��d paid his bills
sweating stones by twenty rows and stowing that many more again
both vanishing at church-bell ��s ring, toiling to bring sweet honey
mama didn ��t manage money, just took what needed taking
a swelling of the hour
kids and I were flower children back along the years
blisters rowed from irony in banding by our frills
well plowed below the barrow-stays, well seeded, well composed
well composted our adder ��s-tongues in colonies bestowed the word
kids and I were spoken of in seven languages by the hill
offered honeyed teas and trays of wishes buried still and flowing
glowing straight to apothecary guaranteeing clear of degeneracy
but we know better, you and I, in tongue and root and brach
a telling of the hour
root-hounds to the very last, the lot of us beyond thy thrust
beyond thy peace and quiet �� nothing here but marbled busts
family flown, family grown, family thrown beyond us
