Secret Names

megafauna, explaining slowly
that we might understand from a distance
that its name was Flora, thank-you
an event not its fault, but that of its mother
also Flora
an unbroken line of names
dating back beyond generational memory
but not Megaflora, because that
was its father ��s name
equally unbroken
commenting on human weirdness
that if you approached a group of them
through time, you might find your other
more secret names, sparkling
in epoch newness
a closely held delight
akin to the lawn sprinkler it stood in
that others might secretly name
entire extended families in strange dead tongues
missing entire rivers of secrets
species after species laughing
in that brief collapsing flow
