Well Fed Companion

once in a while it would be nice to have a protagonist
not interrupted by their own problematic darkness
perhaps someone at peace with themselves, stepping in
stepping out where needed, and moving on
that we might imagine their homecoming
as one with a rich stew they put in the slow cooker
before heading out, dumplings infused over eight hours
a recipe they modified from family fare years in the making
another ��s grimdark fantasy playing on small screen
before the switch is flipped, cat blinking away
from that fragmented footage of disconnected horrors
deigning to approach for rubbed ears and a spot of gravy
chameleon gear and anonymity set aside for dinnertime
lighting fire laid out at twilight, maple rested three years
oven atop waiting for the morning ��s rise, slow dough
coming up to temp on the counter under damp cloth
some crime fighter then, who ��d rather be baking
napping before the fire at last, warm under their cat
