elderfolk, muttering among themselves
calling me over to check the system out
where are the knobs
where are the settings that click in
where is the reassuring thunk
me, facing the washer / dryer assembly
turning on the water at the pipes
because the installers didn ��t bother
as nothing for cleaning clothing
should require water amidst all this modern
don ��t you even dare
no port-scanning, no connection
no singing home for master ��s voice
sliding my fingers along instead of pressing
guessing where the underlying patterns cry
in distressed cadence so as not to dismember jeans
bring back my knobs
cease thy incessany binging
you who has stolen from history
can clothing possibly become clean
without that joy in solenoid activation
my reassuring thunk
