The Lonely Calling

watching old vampire splatter-cam movies
one gets an eye for the corn starch, for the chocolate syrup
ending up with friends late on a Friday night
chattering chemistry and forensics, drying patterns
lands a career in crime scene analysis
discovers crossover worlds, where [redacted] faked their death
three times, chocolate syrup, corn starch mix, and finally
having maybe met a particularly compliant phlebotomist
three pints of their own personal red, spread randomly
left in a glass to dry in the sink, complete with video, vanished
chuckling with the movie crew over beer
how they were just so bad at it, even once they had
in every regard, the correct materials at the end
and still couldn ��t manage the most basic believability
cooked matter on the base of the ceiling light screwed back in
the old movie trope brought out by [redacted] who pops a case
bright orange, labelled [redacted] filled with disc after disc
old-school, old-tech, clearly an underground boot
saying, maybe not sure about this, but [redacted] gives ��em
after a pause, the late-night second-sight tummy weirdness
production values remarkable, special effects moreso
three movies in, can ��t figure out how it ��s done
sure we ��d be watching murders if the actors weren ��t in sequels
that sort of gut-wrenching grim and cheese, beautifully shot
my partner from work going on alert the same as I three Fridays in
because in [redacted] to which we ��ve already watched the sequel
accidentally out of order, six years ago, that was our crime scene
right down to the weird note under the mirror, the glass in the sink
the lightbulb, which made zero sense, now fitted to a madcap plot
both of us doing that horror movie turn to our friend with the box
who, lopsided grin on their face, a shrug, an Edwardian hand wobble
just sits there sipping their beer, possibly the smuggest asshole ever
[redacted], with a job in fashion, slowly growing more irate
glaring at ��em, saying, god damnit [redacted] what the hell
I knew I recognized your shoes, you said you were in accounting
more era-tainted than ever, hand motions, stance even seated
[redacted] mutters �� you guys, you guys, my best friends
would you fancy a life forever �� the shadow tribes are lonely
we ��d like you all to join us, transition of your choice
because by the sweetest of old gods, Friday night ��s for movies
