Stowing Faces

sweet Wednesday has boilermakers
sawdust floor getting a bit more loaded
old John taking his in stride, sipping slowly
black beer and dark peat unmixed
six-gun checked ��round cloakroom
up comes shadowed stranger
ill-lit even in oil lamp ��s gold spread
swishes drinks to the floor, draws steel
says, well hell, you ain ��t John
guess I ��ll be buying you another drink
old John, taking his in stride, ticks glass
sips black peat largesse in peaceable amity
well sir, I guess you might, shan ��t complain
let me return the neighborly, right as rain
slips in strychnine, ticks again, waiting
old John, he never looks the same
