hitching villages present car-trap ditches, folded on the round
soft shoulder dragging in those inattentive kind fools
nose down, tail up, spitting them back out slow
just enough heft that walkabout makes big eyes
shuffles right, into an American backwards road
avoiding taillights and cranky Detroit forgery in unequal parts
slowly sucked back down into that collapsed chalice
cattails no longer fighting the good fight
pulling handles, both sides, wiping windows
dashboard luminance showing not one life within
just cracked leather, gin bottles on the passenger side
everything bluing, deliquescing, shivering goneness
muted pop absorbed into that seventeen-year cicada rush
tire marks and impact chunks softening back around
erasing evidence, gracing presence passing through
leaving a lone hitcher, muddy through the britches
alone, shrugging, heading down towards lake ��s twilight
cleaning off bits and cruft, 1968 Maine license washing up
on loan and flicking in, then out, nameless, faceless
before it too slithers into dusk, prickling empty fingers
