Skimming

those city noises I ��ve been hearing
through the noise cancellation
since 0430 out here in the rural woods
is the neighbors butchering a skiddah
next to the corpse of a backhoe
or at least the stalled-out rest of one
butchery does not appear to be their intent
but parts have detached in the churn, not critical yet
heat-dirt and ice gone mud up the side
just a skimming at minus five, marking time
and that skiddah ��s grinding metal
might take a while, but that beast ��s all done
the slurring as I arrive, in by markless tar
half-mile walk in cold rusted dawn
comfortable despite the racket
profound, well mixed with offered beer
cooler in the bed of the functional pick-up
truck-balls hanging off the back, cold-cracked
smile, grab one from the stack
not recognizing a one, the truck
the people, even the beer, some newfangled packaging
missing the folk I know live here
between camper and shed just up
proxy neighbors perhaps, votes by attrition
they appear to be trying to pull something out the sump
wrist thick black iron D-rings chucked to logging chain
back of each hard point in an unmoving box
still firmly in the water release of the spring that muds things up
frozen solid, a grave unwilling to release
blade on the skiddah not even dropped once
eye the sump with feeling, swilling the very worst beer
ice cold, ice brewed, flavor of old metal and wilted flowers
just bubbling up, and if it were warmer
a lick of the skiddah would sit better
nope, doin �� it wrong �� whatever that is, it ain ��t comin �� up
nod, ayuh, wish ��em luck, crush the can on my head
fitting in all comferbly, blending
rest the dead on stacked similar, back to the road
no tracks coming or going, like you do
wander instead the two-mile roundabout
resting, watching, waiting, stick-legged things shuffling past
up on the blacktop, lost, lost, and shit at tracking
we ��ll give ��em an hour ��s distance, maybe a bit more
before hitting the rest of the loop, scenting air
taking careful care, as that flock ��s not from here
in a pattern beyond folks from away buying in
half round, hear the skiddah choke out, grind, choke out
three days and three nights then, and check again
each step on the path locking that sucker down
letting it sleep, letting it breath home burial
hibernating deep, not a feather turned to up-and-coming
don ��t mind the city-folk slumming it, but reaping
that ��s another thing entire, and guest right anchors
land-right seals, they can up-wheels arial and flock right on
t ��would be right neighborly
