in the background of the story of empires falling
a village stuffed into a mine entrance on a mountainside
repeated �� god help me �� a mantra, a koan, a neutral hum
expecting neither intervention nor change
nor terribly bothered, well fed upon orchards
potatoes, hidden six-inch terraces
concealing gardens in plenty
from which sprang their patient god
in the manner season change
in the voice of slow water in storm
in the works avoiding erosion
and the rumble, deep within, hauling
under-mountain into home
some few people, comfortable
digging in, planting, reaping
repeating �� neutral birth
prized things ever churning
neither knowing their god
nor concerned their words were
welcome, welcome, welcome
