Barges �� Bones

respectfully, fires of good hard wood
nice and hot, less spitting, that when we send your memories up
no fat sparks down our shirt fronts, no startled dogs
despite the hard crack of well-seasoned oak
far enough out we don ��t light the fields ��
finished, sink the barge if it hasn ��t plunged
last bit of human stink down in drifts
where if you swim out in perfect light
you can see skeletons of old boats, old anchors
all that way down, happy ancestors offering you
a way through, always coming
but you, breaker of oaths, respectfully is for could have been
we ��re just finishing the path here, and our ancestors
one upon the other, taking turns
will place bare thumbs where once the hollow of your throat
thrummed in hummingbird words, flitting clear
that as we sleeping see their visage and trade advice
no word of yours, no expression, no motion
comes clear
