it ��s not like there ��s an easy bravery
or there is, but that ��s through training
expected, worked for, infatuated
monster-facer, killer-of-demons
singing old hymns
swinging the censer
swearing old drinking songs
slinging the hammer
but this whole alone-thing
not trading endless quiet
for empty �� sixty years on
of not making consequence of oath
prayerless upon each breath
the blasphemy of anti-trained
disservice to those estuary gods
in a dozen fullnesses of time
that one might be given known things
some standing-against to prop one up
a roar, a rage, a road ��
even walking would be better
were there a road, were there a rage
were there a roar, were there anything but stillness
in this utter beauty of a world
by given word
one foot not in front of the other
waxed self-working leather
roiling in that supple thing
of which we know nothing
humming tuneless, void-lungs
pulling endless in upon declension
no language yet with words to natter
which skin is this I ��m wearing
