Emergency Flare

core to a good solid panic is chambers of the heart
all out of order from the start
Siamese twin elephant noises
not-ba-thump
as one pops the case in the dark
pulls the 12-string for a sing
discovering the LED traffic rods by bumping ��em
setting ��em off
three hard flashes each
not quite in tandem
rucking back off the bed
one fluid practiced motion
rolling hard left
tucking the dog
covering ears
opening mouth
placing mass between
expecting a wash of overpressure
getting instead repeat, and repeat, and repeat
brain parsing stuttered Ss in Morse
all short-short-short
untucking from the dog
carefully, so carefully deconstructing emergency rods
popping the magnets into string sleeves
unthreading plastic, pulling batteries for same
humming that song one ��s remembered finally
what sent for the guitar in the first place
strung to let ��s never do this again
cat on the top shelf
clearly agreeing
all puffed
