here, one expects to die early
or quickly to have more dead friends
than ones still feeding their dragons
or more quickly still to fall under
worn near to nothing, automaton rote
just lending meat the brass and steel paces
even acquaintances no more than a cig
late in the night under the ringing bells
in that deaf concordance where artillery
keeps mute company
