filling in
harbors many layers between bloody Sunday and black Friday
memories of that first hundredweight in gold roll free
described as a single coin, and stolen soon after
a thousand more, capitalists and gods streamlined
somehow that thunderous mass into pocket change
that one might suspect to swiftly descend
through pants, through wagon, possibly through mortared stone
old Roman road driven yellow-bricked by greedy meteor
skies themselves opening fire, taking sides, leaving funerary smudges
a game of mass conversion rocking currencies against each other
back-and-forth threshing profits into limited bottomless pockets
profit the hammer from which impoverished do not rise up
mall overrun, true indifference between safe landings
and slamming into mars with embarrassing vigor
grunted impact claiming instead of error, a beautiful blame
of anyone claiming ejecta, that smelt is dealt
investigation redirected impervious ardor
that money is magnet, driven upon rail, sped fast
crack in track of space, empty of air, displaced
marginalia noticed only in liquefaction
that, in muttered imprecations against hydroplaning
foils gold, glossing over holes, rain tricking down
old paths blasted, flaws invisible, save when one slows
falling in
