Flour Rule

by banked fire, a plank table
endlessly oiled, soiled, cleaned
now deeply scarred, filled, repaired
upon it, guests �� elbows
four good loaves of black bread join
baked with cornmeal and molasses
buttered thick, remembering deep winter
topped with potted meat
princes feast less well in their chambers
clutched to duty, clutching at pleasures
their servants long used sporting fancy
unseen, unknown, unregistered
yearning for parents �� tables
and thick bread in winter
we guests remember revolution
burning one king for another
shrug, forty years of slumber
gone beneath fastness replete
instead, turns in the kitchen
learning well that banked heat
bakers �� ovens in mass complete
turning up our covers
needing no call to the sharper edge
when our fields do not lie fallow
when left to our own and our families
no war and no burden of marrow
let royalty ignorant lie, generations flying
let us in peace reply, in baking, freedom
