upon first examination, we found them to be friendly
often confusingly so, offering us purest poison
despite our greetings being �� for obvious reasons �� quite specific
how differences in basic compounds could kill either side
only to hear ��you ��re sure, just a bit, I made plenty ��
and, ��I ��m fine, holy crap I ��m on fire,
hair on my chest each time, that stuff ��s divine, ��
before we realized
they were deliberately breeding poison
competitively, and when they spoke to their gods
it wasn ��t necessarily hallucination, but public display of affection
for you, for them, for a general invitation to the universe
to inject some sympathetic feedback resonance
and trigger all their internal transmissions at once
for fun
uncontrollable body motions, leaking, and otherwise banned vocalizations
all taken in stride, retrograde amnesia and deicide just their gentle way
of saying hi, sharing is caring, mud in the eye isn ��t necessarily blinding
but not necessarily not blinding, either
that inviting you and your kin to engage in self-mutilation
wasn ��t some esoteric second-hand revenge for cattle we ��d never touched
but an invitation to joy through agonizing prophecy, ��this is gonna hurt, yo ��
with a desperate desire to go faster than one third reflex-compensation
while at one third mental and physical capacity, screaming
and there ��s a bit of consternation in the back-chatter on ��friendly enough ��
especially if they don ��t at first realize you ��re not food
so please remember to set your translator to loud local broadcast
before disembarkation, lest one of them bite off a piece
muttering all the while, ��what is this, how is it so delicious ��
