Hall Justice

we'd begun a hobbying
breeding for a complex heat
something with earth tones
to take well the smoke
got distracted when dry season
put fire to the seat
when smoking brought complexity
to savage searing tenor
thought ourselves replete
where licks of furious wonder
spilled before us in their oils
savory and sweet
became devoted to repeat
increasing, yes, increasing
sweating and fermenting
atoms split from seat
when war brought us Greek fire
we mistook it for good meal
ground in finest peppers
and laired up our larder
called to order as foul hoarders
tried to share our plunder
but testers screamed in anguish
to our confusion and our wonder
then justice well and scaled
shared lizard skin and burden
burning driest of our timbers ��
we rebuilt in stone and ember
townspeople claiming sinter
did bring torches and ill winter
but instead we fired ovens
ate their torches, shared our warren
where warmer hearts regaled
prevailed on good neighbors
how the difference came upon us
so many years gone from us
now our bakeries are famous
our hot-bread fresh, outrageous
growing wings and leavenings
strong spices in the oven
so bring us meat �� we ��ll bake you wonders
bring us fruit �� we ��ll turn it over
bring us coin �� we ��ll fire the ovens
or empty, coinless �� bring your hunger
we ��ll hold you still, dear townfolk
and hope you take your fill
when lost knights do crest yon hill
our hall is never full
every stranger starts a-welcome
ours, and ours, a-welcome
