the problem is not that our pasture has kelpie
in a pond with an attitude
they ��re not our water-horse, nor indeed is the pond our pond
they just came with the small grassland
rich in spring peepers and that wonderful smell
of loamy decomposition
around which the fence we bought perambulates
door in the gate a thousand times scored
as her otherwheres mistress
comes and goes
the problem is that one of the local school children
perhaps in a fit of waggish good spirits
laid in a small sign under the traditional red outlined triangle
already long weathered in place
declaring farm equipment
get your fresh kelp-ease here
guaranteed to pass everything
or else
three days later we heard the rattle-trap approach of parents
little something ��s wit apologized for at a distance
and please, no more leaving dead under-bed monsters
dragged out blistered into the light of dawn
on a school morning
unshod hoof prints and duckweed
carefully, ever so cleanly planted
in the bedside rug
next to self-same sign
or else
the problem is not that the pond has attitude
or kelpie participation in sports
the problem is that the water-horse
with delicate attributions
has both better politeness and deportment
than our entire community
and is willing to teach
or else
