Oath In Trust

how ��bout we take that little screed
that claims a need for leverage
the promise-this and promise-that ��
because you should
because you would
if you were good
and write it down on parchment skin
where our fingerprints have been
and burn it down to cursed dust ��
not that we must
not that we should
but that it ��s good
to never bow to leverage
but of one ��s own heart alone to promise
only that for one ��s self chosen ��
unbowed, unbroken
and then of promises and dust
to keep the word free-given
and keep the thrust
of that which word has livened
