if I were to follow the pattern laid down before
one representation of love after another
I would find you already gone, distanced beyond my reckoning
and wonder at the loss, but move on, becoming myself resistant
to all these paper things, acid degradation at the pages
marking time, some portion of my heart now reliquary
a component of your having been and unmade
wrapped nestled in flowing glass and lead
where others would use our pieces for faith, and luck
knowing nothing of the marks behind honor
nor of the criticality of failure in determination
once one has lost destiny to another, become part
of someone else's eternity
and under the seal of pewter at the base, some monk's sigil
declaring martyrdom, where eternity made unreal
