Law Abiding
May 26, 2004
when law comes barreling down the pipe
stripping apples of their meat
strange we say, and bitter sweet
but make no move to eat the pieces
and law comes lancing in again
another fruit diced quick and clean
where we before had heeded mean
now apple-scent and justice linger
and law comes bursting from its labor
gutted passion jawed to treason
neither wheal nor comfort in the reason
just changing harbor with the season
and flavor, all we taste now's tepid
water without oxygen
and labor, all we waste now's leavened
neither rose nor sepulcher
when law comes barreling down the pipe
animal we call it - and offer meat
fearful and unreasoned
