Circumstantial Evidence

when I'd come round t ��were the others dead
bodies cold like my body's cold, twisted amidst the leather dust
nary a spark, nor patterned mark, nor answers where answers must
and I'd asked were the hand here mine, remembering calculation
how long before the failure catches, how long before the failure catches
a blow to spare my life
but the calculation answers quick, where fighter born I was taken first
sparkled light, then darkness thick, and the patterned blood an answer
these peopled portions of the room, succinct in virtue's lack
tacit reminder of the fact and foremost to recollect
blood answers first and last in the fight, here died Rea, here fell Goan
and never a blade drawn, just the hand, smaller than mine and - faster
so here's the word, in powerless nest, from stealth and serpent's cunning
came the break at the base of the next, iota short and leaving life
that I should wake to this, skint of duty, honor, friends
and no response but the shape of the ringless hand, buried in their flesh
who wishes life, who wishes life, who wishes recompense
at last the memory of peace, harnessing itself to death
when I'd come round the injury did mesmerize my person
forgotten the oaths of solstice new, and pledge of halt to fighting
so quick upon the pledge's heels - my death, my friends, my certainty
that oaths like these are made for honing, patient for the coming turn
quiet the serpent that hunts in health, keeping oath and keeping stealth
knowing only the hand of the enemy and the next oath's coming season
