Auditory Potence

oh, I don't remember where the sound came from
but there it was, gliding at the back of my throat
halfway lodged twixt beast's moan and command
that the inner man lie me down and let the features run
expulse the ration and rational, envision someone again
who's love lay rags and honor broken, lest she love
lest she love, and anew the sound begins
there is no honor in her, hearken, the rebellion of heart
all left to beast and horror, and the call that rends apart
and I don't remember where the sound came from
t'were it my answer fading, or t'were it rage
just a pause and the severed rational
no longer tamed, no longer pure, no longer sage
division, cry out, and rust the iron of the hearing
there is no dignity, nor burden - just a sound
and growing - so hunts the hunted, hungers the heart
and passing strange the answer bleeds
no troubled conscience in its wake
ah, the sound, the sound awakes
when man subsides - when man subsides
