never let it be said that motion defeats
when I was young, I was everyone's meat
striking the killing strike so weak no bruise was made
dancing death's number of happenstance
bleeding from my eyes when the world went black
at a half pint, nothing rearranges, nothing changes
even the delicate art rends air and air alone
defended by the hammer of my cousin's strong right
hair blown back into clotted mats
waking in the shed spinning up the motion's back
and my cousin's been dead twenty long years now
and the body's mass has mustered
force has come to back the act, settled motion into fact
and somewhere I became protector
and my family's far, god curse my lack
my daughter now, everyone's meat
no strong right at her back
