Capitulation
November 21, 1998
so I have a translation of the story that destroyed my family, buried my home
it lies within me, brittle, muted, a cavernous empty I now own
you remember the city, the golden city, of agate and throne?
I stayed the distance required for penance; I did not remain
I knew the method, the marking, the maker - I cannot atone
I have a nation of vacuous silence; I have renown
and I'm told that my story might bear out beyond me, carried and sound
deliverance missed by an action and distance - we know how it wounds
but an aggregate nation of resilience and hatred denies us our pain
we were the hatred, we missed on the margin; our weapon came down
the sword was our shepherd, we should not want; we should not reign
we carried our member, he most vaunted, he left insane
mine was the silence our nation now covets - I did not complain
his bird was a sparrow, a whisper of daylight; it melted the stone
the earth it rose up like a tidal wave, my family, my fair city wholly ground
my silence led insistence - your story knows that now
I fled - without resistance
