when I am empty
and the complement of the entire universe is my being
these physical things I am shall fade, aspiration's dreams
pliant, washed aside -- in time
--
and the whole of me passes thin like water
these conflicts I retain shall molder, rent asunder
silent, split unflamed --
--
and the body becomes no more than shade
these creature parts inwoven, spirit's consummation
of self, incandescent winnowing -- one blade
--
a universe
when I am empty
