Prevalence
September 10, 1996
plastic dragons swirld round
one ivory pure with eyes of blue
the other blue with eyes of fright
both talked in circles as they spun
the white spoke of insanity
the blue of everyone
as each slid past the other's throat
the squeal of plastic on plastic prevailed
and of their words not one was heard
across the abyss from where I stood
one dragon spoke of sanctuary, the other
enraged, struck close -- the only words I heard --
for sure -- were these
"trust not thy neighbor, adversary
they'll feed upon your failures, knowing
all we'll do comes down to nothing
as the serpent said, trust no one"
the dragon blue with eyes of night
spoke not a word, but hummed lament
then cast itself far down abyss --
stayed clinging there -- relentless,
white -- gone chanting mad -- spewed rhetoric
jabbering down from its height
though no more did it spin
and when its rhetoric ran out
plastic solidified again
