Devil Man

we never asked -- instead searching
like we'd lost a god, out there in the corn
checking each furrow -- once, and once again
between shallow till and harvest
checking the mud, checking the mud
here little god, I have some water
down by the bottom of my soul
and if I spill myself out, maybe you'll let me
come closer, here where the rain fell
and if I spill myself out, maybe you'll let on where you've been hiding
as if I didn't already know this year would be a tired planting
checking the mud all the time, looking for something
maybe some water -- beneath each seed of corn
I remember this young man
planting, one step, planting
and tamping the ground each time as you would a child
moving on quiet under the sun, alone in his act
of pushing a hole and burying -- each grain
and if I spill myself out far enough
way down into the mud
maybe I can find where I left myself
down there with my small god
swirling the mud
I followed him home once, this memory of a man
one day when I thought sure any god I'd ever had was buried
dead, decrepit, a pale skirt upon the warning of omniscience
watched him kiss his wife and hold his near new child
up to where the sun had been
just before the naked stars shone
