Setting Clear the Burden
April 6, 1996
deliverance came close as thus
a crucible of mass and rush
though not a hush did fall between
the soldier and the green's cold thrush
for not his eyes were clean, his seer
awash with iodine, drew fear
as bird from breast, beast from nest
his tears so salt they scar'd
deliverance, blind dance at dusk
past ashy pit, past bayonet thrust
the physical nature of sound, like fear
bound to cherish one's ear's last trust
