Hunting Home
April 20, 1996
curing meat usually took days
slicing thin, extracting sinew, shelving bone
laying layer upon layer across the racks
connected by memory alone to deer
red paint, cheap from the markets, replacing
what should have been ochre -
markings clean and mechanical, thankless
convulsed torus and running forms
more automatic than connecting
smoke rises evening times
clean smell of feed and living
nearly set aside behind the ozone
creasing brows, clouding lungs
making forgetful our own
