Tarantula
February 23, 1996
they'd a cannon back along stockade the wall
taking up space where a garden had been planted
all the way around - never been fired somehow
though the kids knew what it was, called it old one
or tarantula, depending on their games
kept it clean with diligent scrubbings
more care to it than their own condition
and even when harvest came around they'd leave
just enough room for the big gun - the little ones
created it a park just large enough, and the old ones
they'd pack corn on their backs and mumble
about that much more space to be had
if only they could shift that iron's tons
