Transition
January 2, 1996
I seem to remember a time of soap bubbles
blown out as steam filled glass tears into the cold
some deep chill that numbers for me had yet to measure
a child still, and the fantasy of the bubbles gripping me whole
following what should have been the most transient perfection
and then nothingness
when the first sphere struck dry wood I screamed
for it blinked out not of a sudden
but remained, a horrific torn thing
fragile somehow in a way bubbles should never be
little frozen fragments of itself grasping at the air
I swore I could hear the pieces rasping against snow
dismembering themselves as shrouds of tissue shattering
sound like vellum and flies in the distance
curiosity took me for my better
made me watch as I blew yet another bubble
waited a moment, poked it with my finger
silent for a while --
so this is imperfection
so this is why adults lie when their talk pretties
and when they speak of monsters --
things that were men
