his fingers bleed while he plays,
hammering out notes upon the strings
a mad virtuoso capering from years ago
he's set down the instrument
sworn never to touch the strings again
callus washed away in the flow of years
but music lies in vein behind the anger
forcing through the cracks in his self esteem
when they said he'd never walk again
he said he'd never play
with legs a burden in their own waste
here all disdain leaves is a hunger
to cut clean all loss
all leisure
go down to nothing
yet here he leans back in his safety chair
straps tied aside
fingers to the strings
fingers to the bow
fingering to the bone
waterfalling out the notes
an agony recovered
recompense need
and he'll never walk again
but the line steps more soundly than he
