Tapping Time
January 14, 1995
maybe they know you're watching with your window on their world
close open from your shelter to their speed
carrying sack and sack and sack to the wall
burdening you out if they could
piling their bags of sand
one round in the metal flooding
you just reach out and pluck them
if you believe you're good enough
knowing that your window and theirs is scattered by the wind
never quite at the dot you want to be
waiting pain in the still of getting late
lining each up into the shopping glass
buying this one's last breath of time
you can discern each hair upon every last one
blinking little numbers in the glass
meters and seconds - finding one you need in stock
that one's barcode laser tagged as it flaps in the wind
sliding his hands about the bags as if to cork the dike
sack and sack and chambered line
your little shutter and window on god - click

breathing on the glass after one slight kick
shutters closing in from the wind
no dike was ever strong enough
when you shut down and run
