Where your fear is, there lies your task

Published: August 08, 2022

"Where your fear is, there lies your task." - Carl Jung

I dislike notoriety or being well known. I don't like being the center of attention. My feelings on notoriety border on almost able to be identified as fear that at times feels like it may be holding me back. I don't understand the desire others have to become famous or go viral online, especially those that put every aspect of their life online and don't really talk about anything of substance. When watching youtube videos I prefer educational content nd I have feelings of annoyance when a video of people just eating or of someone just talking about nothing that brings educational value. I crave content that informs and so most of the content I consume is educational but I also, where possible, prefer my content to be in text form instead of video.

I'm putting my thoughts out there about this because there are things that I often would like to talk about and bring discussion to but I don't because I don't want to be known or end up going viral. I have thought about doing a youtube channel about computer security and other educational topics of my own but there is already people that make great content already. Writing appeals to me and I would like to peruse that but when your audience is unable to connect with you they tend not to hear or care what you have to say if there isn't a face that can associate where the content may have come from since many want to know that what they are consuming for the most part comes from a reliable source except of course these days when it comes to politics.

I feel like that if I am known or popular than I can't bring about changes that I would like to see in the world from the shadows of anonymity. Maintaining anonymity is hard though and every step you take must be carefully considered to avoid risking exposure. Take for example the recent overturning of Roe v. Wade. I would like to share my opinion of it but I don't want to be linked to those opinions when such opinions can result in death threats. The safety of my family comes first which really drives how I make use of the internet to ensure that I avoid where possible to put myself out there publicly. As it likely predicted that there may come some roll back of progress made it the arena of LGBTQ rights, I would like to help fight in that but I want to do so from behind the scenes. I am uncertain though if I would be affective enough without participating publicly in discourse, but I'm not a person for confrontation. All I would really want is to plant the seed watch it grow so to speak when it comes to many things in life but still cultivate from afar.

"Give a man a mask and he'll tell you the truth." - Oscar Wilde

Now that I have finished this post, one more thought and quote has come to mind that makes me think I might just be able to make a difference, even if from the shadows.

If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito. - Dalai Lama
