Having finally returned this weekend to a permanent track (albeit with upgrades!) I have finally figured out exactly what my ideal weekend is! One Practice, One Qualifying, One Race. That's it.
How original I know. But I actually like televised practice. I like it because I don't really like off coverage talks. Having an hour where teams test and push and work to trial their upgrades gives us fans time to understand whats changed between each session and gives the commentators some time to give their recaps and other notes from the weekend and time between.
But right now the typical race week is awful. I am currently watching FP2 at Barcelona as I type this and its grueling. They run out of things to say and having "unrepresentative" sessions feels pointless? It's really just things that I feel make the race a bit less exciting.
Having a single practice on Friday is an optional viewing session that makes it easier for fans who can't attend or see the session. And the Saturday Qualifying and Sunday Race keeps the important stuff on the weekend.
A lot of people mention one shot qualifying - and I think beyond the existing Q1,2,3 format I'd be for one shots.
But yeah in conclusion. I got shit to do. This is my complaint with playing Fantasy Football (American). There are SO many games on the entire weekend disappears. Less is more for me. I want to enjoy the race weekend. And I'd like to actually watch the sessions rather than skip the practices if I have anything to do Friday/Saturday or if I am away for a weekend. And when the summer comes up I am usually making plans on the weekend - and the sprint weekend was a slog for me to catch up on. I missed the entire thing so I had to go back and basically watch the entire weekend during the week, avoiding spoilers, and with the more back-to-back calendar it was also then another weekend right on the heels.
So yeah! Please F1! Broadcast more of the support series, run more support series, but keep F1 to the vital important bits!
