Excited about starting a new job

Posted on Tuesday November 9, 2021

I want to write down some of the thoughts I am having today.

For the last couple of years my partner and I have been trying to move out of state to put down roots. Since I'm the one of us that brings in the majority of our income, our living situation is dependent on when/where I can find work. This means that in order for us to be able to move residences, I need to either:

I'd been working remotely from March of 2020 to July of this year. The company owner reluctantly asked us to stay home during this period after the county mandated he do so. I loved being able to spend my day someplace I'm comfortable, and I feel that this contributed to my being more productive than I had been in-office. My time and energy wasn't being sapped by this commute to and from the sterile cubicle farm.

Halfway through this period I had written to my boss and the company owner, asking them to consider a permanent remote-work policy. I felt my increased productivity and positive outlook was an asset to the company, and was hoping to relocate soon. I was genuinely enjoying the work I was doing and wanted to see my projects to maturity. I was met with radio silence. A couple of months later I brought the issue up again, and was again ignored. Once the end of this last June was approaching and the owner was bringing everyone back in, I asked once more, and was given a week's extension on remote work. I politely thanked my boss for "working with me" and got back in touch with a recruiter contact.

I'm proud to say that I'm currently on my last week at my current employer. I was finally able to secure an offer for a 100% remote position and a ~10% pay increase. It still doesn't feel quite real, but I expect that will change soon. I'm looking forward to settling back into the comfortable habits I'd established during the last year and a half.

I made my disappointment with the company policy clear in my letter of resignation. I hope that their backward, conservative attitude was worth losing 20% of their development team and a major project owner over. I'm the one who's winning in the end.

I've been spending this week and last knowledge-sharing with my coworkers to try and ease the burden of having to inherit my projects. I hope that my boss knows I'm not doing it for his sake, but for my coworkers'.

I'm building a standing desk, and my partner and I are hunting for houses in the Pacific Northwest. I feel so relieved.

Very nice comment system! good luck in your new job! we must continue expressing that remote work works for us and have companies use that as a differentiation

Thank you for saying so, Steve! It can't be stressed enough that we need to normalize this kind of thing.
