[@z428] (https://loma.ml/profile/z428) [@arcanesciences] (https://mastodon.social/@arcanesciences) I don't think downloading a smolnet browser is all that different from downloading a web browser to browse the www - the only difference being that the latter tends to be included by default in people's OS installs, simply because that's the status quo of the current system. But we are challenging that system, and trying to change it for the better. Similarly, if you don't know what a server is, you don't /have/ to run your own - there are plenty of communities out there where you can sign up to get hosting, such as tilde.town, sdf, etc,... Having a small-computing manifesto posted on the web would be like being a de-growth advocate who travels by private jet.

[@z428] (https://loma.ml/profile/z428) [@arcanesciences] (https://mastodon.social/@arcanesciences) I would argue that gopher and gemini (smolnet) ARE more human focused than HTTP. When you run into a gemini capsule or gopher hole, it's almost always a person, as opposed to a corporation or SEO spam and what not. The www definitively is an innately corporate-friendly environment, as well as being vulnerable to brigading. The world wide web is a bot-ridden cesspool where people are funneled and centralized to services owned by some giant corporation like cattle for their data to be harvested. Even small non-corporate sites these days are full of tracking junk siphoning off people's data. Even if you were to make a website that doesn't have any tracking or heavy js junk, you'd still be a drop in an ocean of spam. The signal-to-noise ratio is so bad, few actual humans will ever even find your site. It's like screaming into the void. People on smolnet on the other hand, are broadly de-growth sympathetic. Moreover the smolnet has a lower energy cost to support, and therefore is more consistent with our ethos, and the simplicity of the protocols make them more suitable for perma-computing.
(Also, as an aside, gopher is not from the 70's, it's actually a contemporary of the WWW, created in 1991!)

Whoa! This is the best thing ever! The Prisoner (the original one anyway) is one of my favorite tv shows of all time - how did I not know this game exists for the Apple II ?!

Re-posting my New Cyberia music video here because the one on the htown account vanished when htown tv went under. Also, because I like it, and it's maybe kinda relevant, as in that moving to a new cyberia with perma-computy comfy-goodness sounds nice about right now.

No HTTP.
This is primarily a smolnet project.
However, there are quite a few mobile browsers for both gemini and gopher. You should be able to find other browsers for gopher or gemini in the appstores of whatever mobile platform you're using.
Also, lagrange (which can browse both gopher and gemini) works on android and ios now.

If it is to provide information to yandex users (ie citizens in .ru), then one could argue that might be a good thing (although no www search engine has business indexing smolnet imho).
However I suspect instead they are slurping up textual content for feeding AI datasets - that is very much a bad thing IMHO.
2023-05-04T17:55:58.678Z (jns)
Which, I guess, means this is a new thing.
2023-05-04T17:55:06.861Z (jns)
This is what the yandex indexing looks like in the grand scheme of past 2 years of gopher traffic (see the hyuuuuge spike)
2023-05-04T17:49:02.133Z (jns)
TIL yandex indexes gopherspace with actual direct requests to [#gopher] (https://mastodon.linkerror.com/tags/gopher) servers (not via a http proxy)
