i roast all my coffee at home these days, but i started out with an aeropress gifted by my parents and basically choosing randomly in the grocery store. i prefer change, experimentation, and keeping away from routine so roasting half a pound at a time lets me always have something different, plus a lot of opportunties to improve my roasting.
sweet marias has been my go-to source for green coffee with their constantly rotating, wide selection which you can get in 1, 2, or 5lb bags (or larger). they break all the coffee down by region (though they also sell blends) so i just click around for natural process coffees from africa for myself, and usually some washed colombian for my partner. neither of these are rules though because trying out whatever sounds interesting from the cupping notes is the best part, besides the price. green coffee is anywhere between $5-9 per pound, and i get to choose the roast level and learn something in the process.
i'm roasting on an aillio Bullet R1 v2. it's a super capable roaster, induction heated which is very important to me (no gas), can be hooked up to a computer to see real time roast curves like bean temp and rate of rise. i set up some passive ventilation but it's not perfect and i've gotten in trouble for getting it a little too smoky before.
a friend of mine sold me his old rancilio silvia for a great price (thanks Jake!) at the start of the covid pandemic which really kicked off a deep dive into the coffee prep and everything related. i passed it on after about a year and decided on a Decent Espresso machine, the DE1+ which is basically the nerdiest espresso machine you can get. it has pressure and flow profiling, real time graphs, bluetooth scales, and heats up the group head in a few minutes. you might be able to tell that i like data and graphs... 8)
you can see live updates of my shots along with their graphs on visualizer.coffee. the machine uploads them to this community made site which is pretty cool!
you can see my roasts when they are uploaded to roast.world as well.
coffee isnt something for me to be a snob about, i just love seeing what there is to offer from the worlds most traded commodity. if you ever want to trade roasts with me, send me an email!
