Has anyone here successfully operated a self-hosted mail server? Do solutions like "mail-in-a-box" actually work?

@nristen thanks! · 2 years ago
It has been about 10 years since I used to work for an ISP who had their own mail server. I had not heard of a "reputation" but I do know that once you got blacklisted, it was a difficult and time consuming process to get off the black list. Again this was 10 years ago. Citadel does not provide a method of adding a DKIM signature to outbound email which sometimes causes messages to the big providers (gmail, etc) to be blocked. https://citadel.org/dspam.html · 2 years ago
Did any one of you have a problem building your IP's reputation? Based on what this guy wrote it's a pain in the ass:

@nristen thanks, citadel looks like exactly what I need · 2 years ago
@remyabel thanks, that's good to know. I looked into mail-in-a-box a bit more and I see what you mean. I'd rather learn more and create a customized setup. · 2 years ago
I use the citadel mail server. https://citadel.org · 2 years ago
I don't use mail-in-a-box, but with opensmtpd amavis its a easy. Just remember to set up DKIM, SPF and reverse DNS. Also check your IP is not reported or marked as residential · 2 years ago
I did for a while with OpenBSD, no complaints. Never tried one of the in-a-box options. · 2 years ago
I wrote a setup script, and I run a mail server created with it. https://github.com/Kevin-Sangeelee/lxd-email-server It works, though I haven't implemented a spam-checker (still have no need for one). Never tried any 'out of the box' offerings, but I expect they'll be as good or better. · 2 years ago
