Derry band, Lavengro, had been scheduled to perform on the second day
of the Second Sounds three day festival, organised by Live at the
Square, that was due to go ahead this weekend in Derry.
The band- made up of Gareth Borrow, Jordan Edgar and brothers Dave and
James Healy- were due to support Gavin James on Saturday, but
organisers announced this week that all three concerts had to be
postponed due to unforeseen circumstances.
The organisers of the original festival, Live at the Square, released a
statement which read: "It is with regret that due to unforeseen
circumstances, Live at the Square must postpone the upcoming Second
Sounds in St Columb’s Park, Derry, planned for this weekend.
"This will mean that all shows planned for 26-28 May 2023 will not go
ahead at this time.
"We are working hard on new dates at this time. More information to
follow in the coming week.
"Refunds are available from point of
purchase: support@glistrr.com and Millennium Forum Box Office."
The band then decided that they would put on a free open-air gig
outside Derry's The Embankment Bar & Grill for all those left
disappointed by the news of the festival being postponed.
Chatting to Derry News, band member Dave Healy said: "It was probably
one of the most exciting music events to come to Derry for the past
while.
"When it comes to music, apart from the Jazz festival, not much comes
to the town. There were some big names and people were excited.
"Obviously it got postponed and a lot of people aren't very happy about
it; we were gutted.
"So, while we were waiting on the new dates, we thought, 'We need to do
something here.'
"There's people who have organised flights and trips for it and we came
up with the idea to put on a free gig for everybody- a bit of craic for
the bank holiday weekend."
With the assistance of the Bentley Group- who have organised the set up
for the gig- the boys will now perform outside The Embankment
restaurant in Ebrington on Sunday, May 28 from 4pm.
They will be followed on stage by We Love Sax and then a barbecue and
refreshments organised by The Embankment.
Dave added: "We just felt like it was the right thing to do and now we
and everybody else is buzzing about it."
The Embankment Bar and Grill announced that Lavengro had "come to the
rescue" in a post on social media.
They wrote: "After the unfortunate cancellation of the highly
anticipated Live at the Square gigs due to take place this weekend, we
are thrilled to announce that Lavengro has come to the rescue.
"They've decided to put on an incredible outdoor show at the Embankment
this Sunday completely free of charge (to us, and to you) before they
embark on their international adventures and the weather is meant to be
a belter.
"Food is also being served from our Kitchen & BBQ. Catch them at the
Embankment this Sunday at 4pm."
The band are fresh off the back of supporting Gavin James in the Ulster
Hall and the Millennium Forum- as well as playing three sold out
headline shows in Canada, Belfast and Derry.
They are also now set to play at renowned festivals such as Sea
Sessions and Vestrock in the Netherlands.
You can see them play at this weekend's free event. No ticket is
required and the event is for all ages.
The show will go ahead this Sunday (May 28) outside The Embankment Bar
& Grill in Derry from 4pm.
